God is Light!

I remembered a time when I was afraid of the dark. I was just a child and couldn’t see anything around me. Inanimate objects would seem threatening to me and small street lights that would peek through blinds didn’t help much as they looked like evil eyes peering at me as I slept. When I grew into an adolescent I was no longer afraid of the dark but was uncomfortable with it. My sister was able to sleep peacefully in the darkness yet I still felt uncomfortable because I couldn’t make out the shape of my hands or tell the difference between my eyes opening or shutting. I looked forward to the morning because the light was so comforting. Although I did not want to leave my bed out of laziness, the morning light still felt welcoming.

In 1 John 1:5, the apostle John tells us that God is light and there is no darkness in him at all. So what is darkness? The darkness is sin which causes ungodly living.

Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry (Colossians 3:5).

But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, slander, and filthy language from your lips (Colossians 3:8).

There are even things that the Lord hates:

To fear the Lord is to hate evil; I hate pride and arrogance, evil behavior and perverse speech (Proverbs 8:13).

There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, a false witness who pours lies and a person who stirs up conflict in the community (Proverbs 6:16-19).

The darkness is blinding; in the same way that I couldn’t see my hands, others are not able to see the truth. But once the light, which is God, shines through the darkness and we confess our sins, he will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9).

God is so comforting and he welcomes us with open arms. We have to first acknowledge that we are sinners because if we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us (1 John 1:8). As we read the word, study the word, and live our lives according to the word then we are truly children of God and are walking in the light.

Therefore as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity (Colossians 3:12, 14).

Are you walking in the light?

How do you know you are walking in the light?

  1. Well said! I know that one quality of His light is that it reveals all my sin to be just that – sin. I love your story about finding the light comforting as a young person, His light is comforting, too, because it only reveals those things that lead to death. Thanks so much for sharing!

  2. This is beautiful, this is not about calling people to repent, condemnation or judgement. It’s purely that we have Something so powerful to share that we refuse to let others die without experiencing what we are so blessed to experience.

    Thanks for sharing.

    Have a powerful day.

    Breakthrough Futures.
